Acupuncture is a powerful medicine that stimulates specific points on the body to manipulate the flow of energy, restore balance, remove blockages, and add energy where needed. Studies indicate that acupuncture regulates the body’s functions, increases resistance, enhances the immune system, and influences the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Acupuncture works with the body allowing the body to heal itself more promptly and completely. Acupuncture is particularly effective in pain control because of the release of endorphins from the brain during treatment. Acupuncture has also been shown to affect sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels in the blood.

The goal is not limited to relieving specific symptoms but to fulfill the larger picture of enhancing the quality of one’s life.

Chinese Herbal Medicine can be used in conjunction with acupuncture or on its own. Classical Chinese herbal formulations supplement the body’s own restorative processes. Herbs are prescribed as decoctions, pills, powders, or topical treatments and are safe when taken in conjunction with Western medications. Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the most widely used forms of medicine in the world.

Cupping uses suction of glass cups to stimulate the flow of blood, balance the flow of Qi, break up obstructions or to draw toxins out of the body.

Facial Rejuvenation, also known as facial acupuncture, is very effective in making you look

5 to 15 years younger. It is a natural alternative to Botox®, laser, chemical peels, and surgery. With this treatment, fine lines will be eliminated and deeper lines greatly diminished.

Benefits of facial Acupuncture include:

Infertility/IVF, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, 9.3 million American women are currently using assisted reproductive technology, (ART) services to help them cope with fertility issues.  Of available ART services, one of the most widely used is in vitro fertilization or IVF.  This consists of harvesting a woman’s eggs and fertilizing them outside her body.  The embryo that results from this fertilization is introduced into the woman’s uterus to develop as a normal pregnancy.  In vitro fertilization is used in cases of fallopian tube blockage, low sperm count, abnormal cervical factors, immunological factors affecting either partner, infertility after tubal surgery, infertility after treatment for endometriosis, and for unexplained infertility.

A widely published recent German study found that using acupuncture with IVF achieved a 42% clinical pregnancy rate compared to only 26% in the control group that did not receive Acupuncture. When Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are used in conjunction with IVF, clinical experiences suggest the pregnancy rate can be raised to at least 60%.

How does Chinese medicine help improve IVF success rates?

Improves the function of the ovaries to produce better eggs. Regulates the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles. Increases the blood flow to the uterus and increases the thickness of the uterine lining. Relaxes the patient and decreases her stress. Helps prevent uterine contractions. Lessens the side effects of the Western drugs used in IVF. Strengthens and regulates the patient’s immune system. Improves male semen to create better quality and quantity of embryos. Decreases the chance of miscarriage.

When to use Chinese medicine with IVF: for best results, Chinese medicine, including Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Chinese dietary and lifestyle therapy, should be used before, during, and after IVF.  Chinese medicine can help prepare both partners before IVF in order to improve the function of the ovaries, strengthen and regulate the immune system, reduce stress, and improve the quantity and quality of sperm and the quality of the seminal fluid.  This is accomplished in the female partner by treating any menstrual irregularities, such as amenorrhea, PMS, endometriosis, uterine myommas, (a.k.a. fibroids), or heavy bleeding due to lack of ovulation.  Such preparatory treatment usually lasts 3-6 months.  Specific Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal protocols exist for low sperm count, low sperm motility, abnormal sperm morphology, (or shape), and problems with seminal fluid liquefaction.

Once the woman’s menstrual cycle and period are normal according to the guidelines of Chinese medicine, Acupuncture, and Chinese Herbs can be used during the IVF procedure itself.  This typically begins during the month prior to IVF when the woman is placed on oral contraceptives in order to give her ovaries a rest.  Step-by-step protocols are then used at every phase of the IVF procedure. For instance certain Acupuncture points and Chinese Herbs are used to stimulate the ovaries, others are used before the transfer of the embryo, and yet others are used after the transfer has been accomplished.  Not only are different treatment methods used at these different stages, but each treatment is also individualized to fit each patient’s personal Chinese medical pattern.

After successful implantation of the embryo has taken place, Chinese medicine can also be used to help prevent miscarriage.  In general, Chinese medicine is extremely effective for preventing miscarriage when threatened miscarriage is due to hormonal imbalances, such as low progesterone.  For this purpose, it may be used either preventively when the woman is asymptomatic or even after symptoms of threatened miscarriage have appeared.

Moxibustion warms the meridians, expels cold in the body and promotes the flow of Qi and blood by directing heat from the burning of prepared Ai Ye "mugwort herb"

Nutritional Therapy supports the healing process, optimizes digestions, and aids in organ function. The right foods and preparations are recommended, based on the individuals’ constitution and condition.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Weight Control, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, 64% of U.S. adults 20 years of age or over are overweight and 30% are actually obese.  Overweight people are more likely to develop health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, gout, and gallbladder disease.  Being overweight can also cause problems such as sleep apnea, (interrupted breathing during sleep), and osteoarthritis, (wearing away of the joints).  The more overweight you are, the more likely you are to have health problems.  However, studies show that you can reduce the harmful effects of being overweight and improve your health by losing as little as 10-20 pounds.

According to Chinese Medicine, fat tissue represents excess dampness lodged in the skin and muscles.  There are several ways to eliminate this dampness from the body.  The most effective method is to gently increase the body’s basal metabolic rate and improve the processing of water and fluids by strengthening specific organ functions in the body.  When this is done with acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, weight loss is a natural by-product and is both safe and more likely to be long term.

The two most commonly used treatment methods for promoting weight loss in Chinese medicine are the internal administration of Chinese Herbal Medicines and Acupuncture-Moxibustion.  There are Chinese herbs to strengthen all the organs and function of the body, there by helping to eliminate excess dampness lodged in the tissues.  Heather can select to most appropriate formula for your Chinese medical pattern of overweight or even custom blend a formula that meets your specific needs.

There are also Acupuncture and Moxibustion techniques to accomplish all these same actions. Acupuncture may consist of needling points on the body or only points on the ear.  One benefit of ear Acupuncture is that tiny needles or pellets can be embedded on the outer ear and then pressed several times per day by the patient.  This insures continuous treatment between regularly scheduled office visits.  In addition, there is even an ear point to effectively suppress appetite!

The fact that Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, when combined with appropriate diet and exercise, can help one lose weight is confirmed by extensive published research in China.  For instance, in a study reported in issue #10, 2004 of Xin Zhong Yi (New Chinese Medicine), 18 males and 32 females 16-55 years of age were treated with electro-Acupuncture on three acupoints over a period of one month.  At the end of that time, 10 cases reached their ideal body-mass index (BMI), 19 cases lost 11 pounds or more, 15 cases lost 6.6 pounds or more, and six cases got no effect.  Therefore, the total effectiveness rate was 88%.  In issue #7, 2002 of Xin Zhong Yi (New Chinese Medicine), a study was published showing that after treatment for 42 days with Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture, 81 patients lost 11 pounds or more, 91 patients lost 6.6 pounds or more, and 38 got no effect, for total effectiveness rate of 81.9%

Along with a healthy diet and moderate exercise, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture can help you reach your personal weight goals.
